Switching to dust-free bedding materials such as paper-based products can minimize respiratory irritation. Regular cage cleaning, at least twice weekly for most species, prevents the accumulation of waste and ammonia.
Choosing appropriate bedding materials is essential - avoid cedar or pine shavings, which can cause respiratory irritation, and opt for paper-based or aspen bedding instead. The prognosis for respiratory infections in rodents varies depending on the severity of the infection, the species affected, and how quickly treatment is initiated. With prompt veterinary care and appropriate antibiotic therapy, many rodents recover completely from respiratory infections.
Smaller species such as hamsters and mice may have a more guarded prognosis due to their rapid metabolism and small size, which can lead to faster disease progression. Larger rodents like guinea pigs and rats often respond well to treatment when the infection is caught early.
