How to Keep Your Dog's Bed Dry and Clean Through the Monsoon

The smell arrives before you work out where it is coming from. Something sour and shut-in, the way a steel cupboard smells when the rain has been going for three weeks straight. So you bathe the dog. The smell stays. You bathe him again, and it is still there, low and patient, somewhere near the floor.

Meera found hers on a Sunday morning in Pune, on her knees reaching under the sofa for a chewed-up rope toy. The smell was not coming from Kaju at all. It was coming from the flat cotton mattress he had been sleeping on since the first week of June, the one she had been shaking out on the balcony every few days and counting as clean.

Late August is a bad moment for a dog's bed almost everywhere in India. The rain is not finished. The air is carrying as much water as it can hold. Nothing you wash actually dries, it only becomes less wet. And in the middle of all that sits a thick pad of foam or cotton wadding that your dog climbs into every night with damp fur, damp paws and a body that runs a little warmer than yours.

Why the Bed Suffers More Than the Dog

Your dog dries out. Not quickly, and not well in this weather, but air moves through fur and skin, and he shakes, and he moves around the house. Given a towel and a fan he gets there.

A bed has no such luck. Foam and cotton stuffing hold water in the middle, where no air reaches. The cover can feel perfectly dry against your palm while two inches down it is still holding the rain from Tuesday. Put a warm body on top of it for eight hours a night and you have built a small, sealed, humid room.

What grows in that room is not exotic. It is the ordinary stuff already living on your dog. Malassezia yeast, for instance, is a normal resident of healthy dog skin. It causes trouble when the skin surface stays wet and the local conditions shift in its favour, which is exactly what a permanently damp bed does. Vets see the result as an itchy, greasy, sometimes darkened patch of skin with a distinctive smell, often in the ear canals, the armpits, the groin and between the toes.

Bacteria and skin flakes and oils do their own quiet work alongside. So do fleas, which spend most of their life cycle off the animal entirely, in the seams and stuffing of the places it sleeps. Treating the dog and ignoring the bed is why so many monsoon flea problems keep coming back.

How to Keep Your Dog's Bed Dry When Nothing in the House Is

The honest answer is that you will not get it bone dry in August. What you can do is stop it from ever being properly soaked, and give it a chance to lose moisture between nights.

Own two beds, or at minimum two covers. This one change does more than everything else combined. One is in use, one is drying. Rotate them every couple of days instead of waiting for the smell to announce itself.

Get the bed off the floor. Floors in the monsoon are cold and damp and they wick moisture upward into whatever sits on them. A charpai, a low wooden platform, even a folded dry mat underneath makes a real difference. Keep it away from the outer wall too, the one that goes dark with seepage every year.

Put a fan on it. Not the ceiling fan going at speed one in the corner of a closed room, but a pedestal or table fan aimed at the bed for an hour while your dog is eating or out. Moving air is what actually removes water. If you run a dehumidifier or an air conditioner, the room the bed lives in is the room worth pointing it at.

And handle the dog before he reaches the bed. Every walk in this season should end with a proper towel-down, paws included, before he is allowed to fling himself onto his mattress. A dog who is 80 percent dry instead of soaking is the difference between a bed that copes and a bed that ferments.

When the sun does show up for two hours between spells, drop everything and take the bedding out. Direct sunlight and moving air are still the best drying combination available to an Indian household, and they cost nothing.

The Wash That Actually Helps

Washing a dog bed badly can leave it worse than before, because a half-dried bed is a mouldy bed. Aim for something like this, every week or two through the rains:

• Vacuum or brush the hair off first, including the seams and crevices. Wet hair clumps and clogs machines.
• Wash the cover on the hottest setting the fabric will take. Heat is what deals with mites and flea stages, not fragrance.
• Use a plain, fragrance-free detergent and skip the fabric softener. Perfumed residue sits against skin that is already irritated.
• Run an extra rinse. Detergent left in the fibres is a common and completely avoidable cause of itching.
• Dry it completely before it goes back into use, even if that means the dog sleeps on an old bedsheet for a day. Completely means completely, right through the middle.
• Wash the soft toys and the crate mat in the same load. They live in the same damp world and nobody ever thinks of them.

The foam core is the harder problem, because most foam cannot be machine washed and takes days to dry in this weather. Keep the core protected with a washable cover so it rarely needs more than airing. If the core itself has gone sour, that smell is telling you it is saturated deep inside, and the sensible move is usually to replace it rather than fight it until October.

One more thing worth checking while you are at it: the bowls, the collar, the harness and the leash. Wet fabric webbing against the neck for weeks is its own small skin problem, and a spare harness costs less than a consultation.

The Smells That Mean Something Other Than Damp

A musty bed smells like a musty bed. Some smells are coming from your dog instead, and those are worth a phone call.

A sweetish, yeasty odour combined with scratching, redness, or skin that has thickened and gone dark usually points at a yeast overgrowth rather than at your housekeeping. It needs to be confirmed by a vet, often with a simple skin cytology in the clinic, because the treatment is specific and because yeast is very often riding on top of an underlying allergy that also needs sorting out.

A sudden hot, wet, angry patch that appears in a day and that your dog will not leave alone is a different animal. Hot spots flare fast in damp coats and get dramatically worse with licking, so that one is a same-week vet visit, not a wait-and-see.

And if you or a child in the house develops a round, scaly, itchy patch at the same time your dog does, think about ringworm. It is a fungus, not a worm, it passes between pets and people, and its spores can sit in bedding, brushes and carpets for a very long time, in the region of eighteen months. That is a case where the laundry is not a chore but part of the treatment, and your vet will tell you exactly how to handle the house.

She threw out the cotton mattress. She bought two cheap cotton covers and one washable mat, put a wooden crate lid under the whole arrangement to lift it off the tiles, and started running the table fan over it while Kaju ate his dinner. She kept a towel by the door for the walks and stopped pretending that a shake on the landing counted as drying.

Three weeks later, the flat smelled like a flat. Kaju stopped worrying at the base of his tail. Nothing about it was clever, and none of it cost much, which is generally how the useful things in pet care in Pune and everywhere else in monsoon India turn out to be.

The rain will keep going into September in most places. The bed is not going to dry itself while you wait.

You can bathe a dog as often as you like. If he goes back to sleep in a damp bed, you have washed the wrong thing.
